For many, the days of remote working are over. Some of the largest companies in the world—even those who work in virtual and augmented reality (*cough* Meta *cough*)—are forcing their employees to return to work in person. And sure, there are some perks with working in-person with your fellow team members. But for many, the time and expenses required in commuting back and forth to the office are enough to make the job not worth the hassle. If you, too, are looking for a position that you can continue doing from home, you’re in luck! Here are some of the most popular and promising online jobs to have in 2023.
Top 10 Online Jobs in 2023
1. Graphic Designer
Certainly, some companies will use a form of AI to produce some of their marketing assets. But many, especially larger corporations will not be able to do so, as copyright laws cannot be used on AI-created content.
This means there will always be a need for graphic designers, even as AI continues to develop and replace many everyday functions of human beings.
Graphic designers also have the ability nowadays to choose who they work for and when they work with freelance at an all-time high. Some websites where you can offer your graphic design work include Fiverr, Etsy, Upwork, and Freelancer.ca.
But, of course, before you start applying, make sure you have a portfolio of your work showcasing your style and technique ranges. If you don’t currently have any work for your portfolio, imagine what a company might ask of you and create some concept art for them.
Alternatively, you can also rethink existing company logos and branding to show how you could improve even iconic designs in your own way.
2. Web Designer
Similarly to graphic design, web design positions will often require a portfolio to submit alongside your resume. And also similarly to graphic design positions, web design positions are still in high demand despite the threat AI poses to many coding and design-based fields.
In fact, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that the market for web designers will grow by 13% over the next decade. This means over 17,000 positions are anticipated to open up each year.
So, as long as you’re up for the task of learning HTML and perhaps some other programming languages and publishing tools like Flash, you’ll be on-track for a steady online career in no time.
3. Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistant positions are a relatively new concept, but are by no means dissimilar from personal assistant positions in-person.
Of course, virtual assistant duties and responsibilities can differ between organizations and managers’ needs, but overall their tasks include the following.

4. Copywriter/editor
While some suggest that virtual assistants can take on this position, most of the time copywriting and copyediting requires a more specialized worker—namely, one with either a BA in English or equivalent credential, or an overall very strong understanding of grammar and syntax.
After all, AI is always evolving, but it still continues to make mistakes that often require a fine-tooth to comb through.
But with this said, copywriting and editing is not the same as that which many are used to doing in school. It often involves more accessible, less academic language and more focus on search engine optimization (SEO).
Once more, these positions can be freelance (again, on Fiverr or Upwork, or on websites like Writers Work) or part-time or full-time salaried.
5. Social Media Manager
As social media becomes more recognizably crucial to a business’s success, more organizations will be investing in their social media management. And certainly, there are some instances where coming in-person to an organization is helpful for social media management—i.e., creating content with the organization and its workers in it.

This is a position that you can take on either as your own boss or as a worker for a catering or event planning company. And even if you’re organizing the entire event online, sometimes companies will prefer you’re in the area so that you know local resources to use when doing so.

7. Tutor
Thanks to the past three years, tutoring online has recently seen a massive surge in demand. And tutoring online is a great way to offer teaching in a more accessible way.
Again, you can offer this service as an independent entrepreneur if you’re confident marketing yourself and managing your clients. But there are also tons of freelance services for whom you can offer your tutoring skills. Here are a few you can use to start tutoring from home:
8. Bookkeeper
For those who find data management, crunching numbers, and organization easy and intuitive, bookkeeping is one of the best online jobs to have. And, again, even though software is constantly threatening to take jobs like these away, many massive organizations still continue to employ online workers for this position.
You can find bookkeeping jobs permanent part- or full-time with one or two companies, or you can go freelance, depending on your needs and wants in a position. It should be mentioned, however, that these positions often require either a degree in accounting or equivalent diploma/certificate.
These, however, are easy to find and even complete online, as well. So, even if you don’t have the credentials yet, don’t let that deter you from these opportunities.
9. Cyber Security Expert
Cyber security has quickly become one of the most highly requested and thus most in-demand online jobs in 2023. And as intimidating as the position may sound to someone who is not yet an expert in the field, learning it online is absolutely manageable for many.
Coursera, for one, offers a Google-led online cyber security course. Masterschool, for another, both trains you online and helps you find a job in cyber security.

This one is a bit less widely spoken about because it is often spoken about in very specific contexts and through unique keywords. Here, I’m thinking of jobs like accessibility and remote work consultants.
These positions can be catered to your areas of expertise. And while the search may require a bit more searching, the competition will inevitably be far less fierce than a field less specific to yours.
Moreover, in some cases, your position may not be as well-known and as sought-after, but that doesn’t mean you can’t work in it. This might just mean having to educate your audiences into understanding why your field of work is important and why they should hire an expert like you to help them fix the problems they may have.
If you’re confident in your work, you can even approach a company you would like to work for—ideally, one with lots of resources and the ability to pay you—and demonstrate to them why they should hire you.
This might look like highlighting the ways in which their practices or the ways they cater to their audiences are inaccessible. It may also look like showcasing how you’ve seen malpractices like the ones they have in previous workplaces and how you’ve helped them overcome these problems in the past.
